Between 1998-2002, photographer France Lebée-Nadav collaborated with the sculptor Drora Dominey on a project of photographing monuments throughout Israel, which culminated in the book “Everywhere, Landscape and Memory in Israel.”
En route the monument’s sites, Lebée-Nadav photographed everyday Israeli landscapes, ones that were neither grand or glorified. In hindsight, it is evident that these photos were informed by the monument project, capturing a wounded and painful landscape.
After revisiting the series, I approached photographer Tomer Appelbaum, who in recent years started documenting the news events he covers for Haaretz newspaper with a drone camera, in addition to photographing them at street level. I invited him to follow in the trail of Lebée-Nadav’s photos and re capture these landscapes today from a bird’s eye view.
